James B. Glattfelder
James B. Glattfelder is an author and academic interested in the foundations of reality, the nature of consciousness, and the limits of knowledge. He holds an M.Sc. in theoretical physics next to a Ph.D. in the study of complex systems, both from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and has gained visibility as a public speaker, with various media outlets covering his academic work.
His open-access monograph Information—Consciousness—Reality: How a New Understanding of the Universe Can Help Answer Age-Old Questions of Existence, published in Springer's Frontiers Collection in 2019, describes the rise of a new scientific paradigm and has become a popular download from the publisher's webpage. In 2025, his second book appeared, The Sapient Cosmos: What a Modern-Day Synthesis of Science and Philosophy Teaches Us about the Emergence of Information, Complexity, Consciousness, and Meaning, published by Essentia Books, a press dedicated to scholarly works related to metaphysical idealism.
Beyond his academic work, James spent sixteen years as a quant in both traditional finance and the distributed ledger ecosystem, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Banking and Finance of the University of Zurich. He grew up in the Swiss mountains and is happily married. In his spare time, he is a frequent blogger.
